Formally established in 1996, the department of Rheumatology of Beijing Jishuitan Hospital has been founded nearly 20 years.

At the beginning of 1995, Dr. Husheng Wu engaged in advanced studies in Department of Rheumatology, Peking Union Medical College Hospital(PUMCH). The next year, he opened the outpatient service of rheumatology in Beijing Jishuitan Hospital. In the same year, Dr. Hui Song joined the team, and then, went to PUMCH for professional development in 1997. The Department of Rheumatology was founded in 1998, after Dr. Song opened the ward under the aegis of the hospital. With the comprehensive work in medicine, teaching and research, the new department can rapidly develop and strengthen from then on.

There have been 13 doctors and 30 beds in the department, since its beginning with 4 doctors and 12 beds. Along with the advantage of the hospital’s Orthopedics, our department serves patients all over the country including more than 20 provinces, even overseas Chinese and foreigners. Increasing year by year, the outpatient amount of our department has reached 40,000 people per year, and annual inpatients amount has been nearly 1000 people.

In 2005, the Dept. of Rheumatology was at a crucial turning point. In January, Dr. Hui Song took charge of the department. With the support from the leadership and other department of our hospital, all medical staff led by Dr. Song, worked together to embrace the improvement of our department. In that year, we harvested the certification in Rheumatology of national drug clinical trial institution, and the qualification of training base of Beijing medical residency standardized training stage, and the qualification of Ministry of Health, Division of Rheumatology specialist standardized training as well.

Following the pace of the national health industry, our Dept. of Rheumatology is now advancing with the times and blazing new trails. With the backing of hospital, Dr. Song, leading all the staff, opened the Rheumatology clinic of chronic disease management on 8 April 2014. The pioneering work gets the recognition of many patients, the better implementing of treatment, and the guarantee of long-term efficacy as well.

1. The human resources distribution

Team of 13 doctors: senior professional title 3, medium grade professional title 3, primary title 7. 4 PhDs, 7 Masters.

Team of 13 nurses: 5 bachelors, 8 specialized college degree.

2. Medical Services

In January 2013, the Huilongguan Hospital District opened. At the same time, the outpatient service of rheumatology in Huilongguan, provides convenient access for residents living in the northern part of Beijing. Moreover, the spectrum of disease has been further expanded. Patients afflicted with rare disease and stubborn disease flooded in our department. Through comprehension of multi-disciplinary and cooperation of multi clinical division, our medical staff engaged in learning, and harvest joyance.

3. Teaching

As long-established teaching hospital, it assumes the teaching mission of the eight-year postgraduate education for Peking University Health Science Center, and impels the educational reform, carries out new teaching mode: “integration courses” of multidisciplinary, CBL mode, PBL mode, and so on.

As vice Chairman Unit of the Department of Immunology of Peking University Health Science Center, we enthusiastically participate in the academic, teaching and research activities of our Department.

4. Research Training

We developed researching activities revolving around clinical which focused on gout, AS, SPA, RA, and bone metabolism disorders. Based on the accumulation and improvement, we have obtained foundation of work.

As the Rheumatology of national drug clinical trial institution, we conducted 3 International multi-center projects and more than 10 domestic multi-center projects. We have passed the reexamine of certification, state Food and Drug Admini stration and passed the reviews of ongoing projects and completed projects.

We have published dozens of articles.

Team of doctors supervised the “JST Osteopathic Medicine”, and dozens of other professional books.

Dr. Husheng Wu is the chief editor of “Gout and Crystal Arthritis”.

We participated in the 11th national five –year-plan science and technology support program. (Project number: 2008BAI59B02).

We participated in Chinese SLE Study Group (CSTAR).

We participated in 863 plan project. (Project number: 012AA02A513).

In 2012, we published “Community management of osteoporosis” as teaching material of chronic disease management for National training for general practitioners.

We are the second responsible unit of 2015 Beijing Science and Technology popular science project “Love Life Fulcrum Attention Bone and Joint Disease”.

5. Social Services

Over the years, whole medical staff in our department was active in social activities, keep on participating in Medical Alleviation of Inner Mongolia Regional Poverty and Medical Alleviation of Yanqing District Poverty. We opened free clinic for community monthly and launched large free consultation for the “World Arthritis Day”, as well as osteoporosis free consultations every year.
