History:Our department was founded in 1977. It was the first department focused on the treatment of musculoskeletal tumors in China. The founder was Prof.Song Xianwen. He was the first chairman of Orthopeadic Oncology Group in Chinese Orthopaedic Association. His achievement included surgical treatment of sacral tumor, the limb salvage of osteosarcoma, EAR treatment of malignant bone tumors, surgical treatment of giant cell tumors etc. His impact on the field of orthopaedic oncology in China was extensive. His great and historical contribution made him the recognized founder for bone tumor treatment in China.

Present:We have one ward inside the hospital and two other technically cooperated hospitals for musculoskeletal tumor patients. We treat more than 1,400 new cases of musculoskeletal tumors, including 180 new cases of osteosarcomas. The 5 years survival rate is 78.5% for the standardly treated osteosarcomas. We have established the database for musculoskeletal tumors, which includes the files, imaging, pathological and clinical pictures of patients. It has 17,706 cases up to 2015 July in the database and it keeps growing about 1,400 cases every year. It has 2,715 cases of osteosarcomas in the database. We are one of the largest bone sarcoma centers in the world. In 2010, our department was awarded as the National Key Specialty by the National Ministry of Health of China.

Chairman and Physician Team:Prof. Niu Xiaohui is the chairman of department. Prof. Niu is the president elected of Chinese Anti-Cancer Association Sarcoma Group. He is the president of the Osteosarcoma Committee of Chinese Society of Clinical Oncology (CSCO). He is also the vice president of Chinese Medical Association Orthopaedic Division Bone Tumor Group. He is on the board of the International Society of Limb Salvage. There are 20 physicians up to 2015. Many young doctors were sent to USA, Australia, Italy and Japan to study the clinical practice and research of musculoskeletal tumors.

Research:The current research support is from Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), Capital Developing Foundation of Beijing, and Capital Characteristic Clinical Application Foundation etc. The topics include Standardization and Application of Osteosarcoma Diagnosis and Treatment in China, The Intra-operative Navigation System Based on the CT imaging for Bone Tumors, and The Key Technique of Navigation Surgery for Bone Tumors etc. We have published 34 books and more than 200 articles. More than 20 articles are published in English Journals, including JBJS and CORR, such as Giant cell tumor of the extremity: retrospective analysis of 621 Chinese patients from one institution(JBJS), Chondroblastoma of bone in the extremities: a multicenter retrospective study(JBJS), What are the results using the modified trapdoor procedure to treat chondroblastoma of the femoral head?(CORR).

Education:Our department was the medical training center for Peking University and Tsinghua University. The trainee can be rewarded the Doctor’s Degree from these two top universities in China. More than 2,000 orthopaedic fellows were trained since 1956 from all over China. Some of them were orthopaedic oncology fellows and others were general orthopaedic fellows. We have opened the pathology course, chemotherapy course and biopsy course for many times. We have invited many famous international experts to our hospital to give the lectures of musculoskeletal tumors.
