In department of orthopaedic trauma, the total bed number is 153. There are 56 specialist doctors, 55 nurses, in which 16 consultants, 19 associated consultants, 17 doctors and 17 masters. Average amount of out-patient and emergency service is 100,000 per year. And operation amount is about 7400 per year. This department was listed as clinical priority specialty of national ministry of health in October 2010.

The department of orthopaedic trauma was founded in 1957, which was one of the oldest clinical specialties of Beijing Ji Shui Tan Hospital.

The clinical service and research of this department mainly focus on bony and articular injury under the lead of Prof. Meng Jimao, Hong Ruoshi, Guo Ziheng, Wang Yicong, Cui Jiarong, Cai Rubin, Rong Guowei, Zhai Guihua, Wang Manyi, etc. Over hundreds of thousands of patients have been admitted to this department since setting up. Now we have more than ten world-class subspecialties, which include pelvis & acetabulum, elbow, shoulder, wrist, foot & ankle, hip, knee, external fixator, osteoporosis, etc. This department is also the unique level 1 trauma center in Beijing, with most advanced orthopaedic operating theater and equipments.

In 1980s, AO principal and technique of fracture management were firstly introduced to China by the department of orthopaedic trauma. The 1st AO course in China was held in 1989. Prof. Wang Manyi, the director of department, is the president of AO/ASIF Asia & Pacific, consultant of orthopaedic trauma division of Chinese Orthopaedic Association, vice-chairman of Chinese Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons, vice-chairman of Chinese Sports Medical Association and chairman of orthopaedic trauma division of China International Exchange and Promotive Association for Medical and Health Care.

The department of orthopaedic trauma launched the international-level project of computer assisted navigation orthopaedic surgery firstly in China, which had independent intellectual property rights, and was really clinically needed. We also obtained lots of projects sponsored by national 863, “12-5s”, national natural science foundation, capital developmental foundation of Beijing, major project foundation of Beijing Municipal Science and Technology Commission, scientific and technological progression foundation of Beijing, science and technology star foundation, etc. “The Clinical Application of Orthopaedic Frame Navigation Technique” was supported by Plan 863 of ministry of science and technology. The subject of “Research and Application of Intelligent Minimal Invasive Surgical Techniques and Equipments in Orthopaedic Trauma” was included in national “12-5s” project. “Radiological Measurement and Diagnosis of Displacement in Unstable Pelvic Fractures” was sponsored by national natural science foundation.

The department of orthopaedic trauma undertakes the work of training medical students of Peking university. Prof. Wang Manyi is the professor and doctorial mentor of Peking University. This department also takes charge of training work for national orthopaedic fellows, which is assigned by ministry of health. Besides, there are annual JSTH advanced courses of acetabular fracture and elbow injury，which are remarkable and famous in orthopaedic training. There is another important training program charged by this department, which is standard training for orthopaedic residents.
